Are you unemployed? Did you know that New York State will allow you, and even assist you--in starting your own business while you're collecting unemployment? The program is called SEAP Self Employment Assistance Program (SEAP)
State and Federal legislation has established the Self Employment Assistance Program (SEAP) which provides certain eligible individuals the opportunity to start their own businesses while collecting unemployment insurance benefits. In order to be considered eligible for this program, you must first be identified by the State's profiling system as likely to exhaust benefits.
If you've ever had the dream of starting your own business, the department of labor can help you make that dream come true. We spoke to the owner of a local business who started her business in 2000 after being laid off from a job in the...yes...mortgage industry (last real-estate bust). "I submitted my business plan, got approved, and spent my "unemployment" time building my business instead of job hunting," she stated. Combine that effort with guidance from your local SBA office and maybe your dream can come true.
It doesn't have to be a big business...you can take one of your professional or talent skill sets and start a business from home.
"All it takes is talent, experience and knowledge (of the service or product you plan to offer), passion and a dream," stated the business owner. "You can start a business doing just about anything that people need--it doesn't have to be a big business or require a big investment to be successful or produce an income. Many people make a good living right from their home computer, sewing machine, or kitchen table." (She started her business with a paint brush.)
So...visit the website link above and let us know if your business dream comes true! Good luck!
